Description
The original Old Low Light, along with the Old High Light, was established in the first half of the 16th century by Trinity House of Newcastle upon Tyne. Viewed from the sea, vertical alignment of these two lights ensured safe navigation of the treacherous mouth of the River Tyne. The building we see now is generally reckoned to have been rebuilt around 1727 and ceased to function as a lighthouse in 1810.
